Morbid Curiosities

Its that time of year where the first "Christmas Gift Guides" start to appear. Usually featuring all the same old stuff, produced by the same companies.
This year I thought I would share some gift ideas that are a million miles away from the norm, kicking off with this fascinating book entitled Morbid Curiosities
If you, or someone in your life, loves the strange and macabre this rather beautiful (if unsettling) coffee table book is perfect.

Morbid Curiosities: Collections of the Uncommon and the Bizarre, features 18 of the world’s most extensive collections of the macabre from archaic contraptions for electroshock therapy and jellied human brains, to confession letters by notorious criminals and the weapons they used to commit their crimes.

The collections are absolutely eye-popping with photographs in the book showing a huge range of remarkable pieces.

Just some of the pieces include a two headed taxidermied cow, a “Quack Shock Helmet”, metal “fingertip shapers” worn by women at night, 20th century respiratory masks that inspired Darth Vada, art by mass murderers, a mummified gorilla death mask, gas masks for horses and dogs, a huge collection of photographs of 19th century skin diseases and countless skulls, preserved organs, shrunken heads, Ouija Boards and skeletons.

Morbid Curiosities provides a fascinating insight into the strange world of collectors of the macabre, alongside interviews with each collector, detailed captions tell the curious stories behind each object, many of which are being shown outside the private world of their collections for the first time.

I'm calling this a coffee table book but would advise caution if you have kids or members of your household who are less enamored with the dark side of the moon. However if the weird, wonderful (and frankly twisted) tickles your pickle then this would make a very welcome (if disturbing) addition under your black tinsel Christmas tree.
You can purchase Morbid Curiosities for £19.95 here
