Plussie Style Steal: Jess From New Girl

I get a lot of style crushes. One day I'm mooning over pictures of white suits imagining I'm Kerry Washington in Scandal, the next I'm ordering black spandax pants channelling Kat Von D.
My style influences are eclectic but one thing they have nothing to do with is body shape or dress size.
Listen ladies I heart Adele and Beth Dito as much as the next fatty but flicking through any fashion mag you would think these are our only options as style icons and that quite frankly is far too narrow for me.
Its easy to discard certain looks even though you absolutely adore them, because you just cant see them working on a plus size figure.
That's where I come in. Every month I'm going to do my version of a famous chicks style. Showing you how I pull elements of their key look together and make it work on a fatty.I'm calling it my "Plussie Style Steal" come along for the ride.
This month I'm all about Jess (played by the teeny tiny Zooey Deschanel ) from the TV series New Girl.

Words can not convey how much I love the style of this kooky character.
Its one part Parisian chic to one part thrift store and so sweet it almost makes your teeth hurt. Its what I would term cute casual and its actually perfect for a plus size hottie.
It matters not a bit that the real Jess could fit in my pocket, she is rockin some serious style and ladies I'm going to steal it.

Casting around some of my favorite plus size brands I've found some perfect outfits to style stalk Jess.

Copy The Look Ladies This fifties inspired frock is as pretty as a picture and one of my all time faves from the Jess wardrobe.

Get your version from Asos Curve

Cute nerd is Jess's signature style as are vaguely retro looking pastel colours as seen here in this beautiful yellow number.

Today Betty is....Jess from New Girl

And here I am channelling Jess.I've stolen her style and I'm making it my very own.
I've chosen a beautiful skater dress by Yours clothing to help me copy the long lashed Ms D.
As soon as I set eyes on this red rose check number I knew it would be perfect for my Jess homage.
Its got the vintage inspired print, bright colours and sweet little belt which all go to make it a perfect Jess dress dupe.

Getting my Jess on
To style stalk a little bit more Ive worn my hair down and gently curled it before adding a Minnie Mouse headband. Its girly and very Zooey. If Zooey was fat and lived in England.

Hey New Girl

I'm stealing her style-plussie fashion
So there you have it. I've stolen Zooey Deschanels style and now you can too!
Keep your eyes peeled for lots more Plussie Style steals and please let me know if there's anyone's style you adore but never thought you could copy. I love  a challenge.

Rub My Belly: Frock of Wonder by AX Paris for Simply Be

Who needs an occasion to wear a brocade dress? not me

I've had this dress for a few months and have been waiting for an opportunity to wear it.
The excuse to wear a bright blue brocade dress with faux leather detailing never materialised as despite what I might try to believe I am not Lady gaga so instead I'm just wearing it for the sheer hell of it.
Its Sunday I'm going for a walk around the Marine lake, other walkers will be sensibly clad in Northface jackets and balaclavas. This is where fashion makes a moron of me and I just don't care.
Come to Mama

I'm a slave to a pretty dress, like an old perv is a patsy to a pretty face. These frocks sashay past me, wiggling their jewel like colours  and lush fabrics and common sense goes out the window.
fast and loose
As soon as I clapped eyes on this frock of wonder by AX Paris for Simply be I knew it had to be mine.My pupils dilated, my heart beat a little faster and my wardrobe wept for the hole this dress left on its rails. Its vaguely oriental, slightly edgy but with a bit of a 1960's twist. A dress this fast and loose with its style references was made for me.
Clinging to my bellyo

Sure I know skin tight shiny brocade might not be the thing to play down a pot belly but life is short and this fat butterfly gotta fly.
It hasn't been an easy relationship. The first one I brought in my usual size squashed my boobs down so much I looked like Barbra Streisand when she turns herself into a boy  in Yentl. Yep the sizing on this baby is awkward.
The sizing on this is slightly challenging if you are bellylicous but its worth persevering with

Risking hypothermia so you can see the PU detail on the shoulders

I've sized up and whilst its a good fit around the bangers its still quite snug around the belly. I don't actually mind this. I offer my belly to people to rub, like a good luck Buddha, its been good to me this belly. It housed a baby, digests yummy food and makes a perfect shelf for leaning a book on when I'm lying down so celebrating it is no problemo.
Pussy power on the hour

Freezing like a fool-fat fashion blogger fail

As you can see the dress is just at knee length and as its as cold as a witches tit I've chucked on leggings and a shrug (also by Simply be-I've had this for about a year and it keeps making an appearance, its the vaguely Joan Crawfordesque shoulders I just cant get enough of them)
I have taken a few of me sans the cardigan but as its freezing here I've kept these shots to a minimum.

In my usual matchy matchy Posh Spice reject fashion I am wearing blue shoes (tenner Liverpool market, keeping it classy) and have done a Stevie Nicks wavy hair homage thing. I realise its not quite worked-lets move on.
If you like this dress I've dicked around for so long that since I first got it its been reduced in the Simply be sale so fly my pretties fly-its the perfect frock for long walks on cold wintery days-well in my world.

Tart With A Heart: Taking Shape Dress

Mutton Chops
When I was growing up possibly the worst things you could call a Woman were the following:
"Tarty"
Fat Slag"
Mutton dressed as lamb"
Looking back I'm astounded that anyone ever had the courage to wear anything other than Victorian crinolines given the tidal wave of judgmental twaddle prepped and ready to drop on their heads if they dressed in a manner considered "inappropriate for their size, age or god forbid suggested a liberal approach to getting laid.
I hate being told what to do,so its possible that I've taken these often heard female focused criticisms and turned them into my very own style stamp.
I'm a saucy bitch who eats chips

Certainly I'm hoping today's outfit sounds the death toll, for all things deemed tasteful and if it makes me look like a saucy bitch, knocking on in years who enjoys chips then my work here is done.

I'm sick of the style judgments
I must be becoming a bit of a curmudgeon in my advanced years as I increasingly find myself furious at how often style rules and judgments are bandied around. Sure there is  an "acceptable" level of fatness that people applaud in order to feel right on but anything bigger that can't be considered "curvy" still makes many people really uncomfortable. Its as if they just can't see past the filter of fat hatred that's been present in our society for so long.
Get past the Fat hate filter

Youthfulness is another stick on which Women seem to be bashed with constantly. Its as if a low bmi and a wrinkle free face are the only indicators of a persons value. Aging is a luxury so many don't get to enjoy that the crassness in this subtle but ever present message can't be overemphasized. On a more basic note how dare anyone tell us that a female face over thirty isn't attractive any more. Just as we go roaring into our prime, ready to start the second part of the big adventure we are told to creep away, hide in the shadows and consider our days as a stylish, edgy force of nature over. Screw that I'm only just getting started.

My bmi and age too high to be attractive apparently-sorry I didn't get that memo

Walk your own path-the end destination will be so much more interesting
That's why we must create your own version of perfection. Not let some faceless moron at a publishers or ad agency tell us whats attractive and whats beautiful. Wear colours that clash, fabrics that stretch across your ample belly, sleeves so short they expose your wobbly arms.

Don't let anyone tell you whats beautiful-make up your own mind
Ignore the haters, the finger waggers, the magazine articles that exclude you and be your own story. Your own style icon. Walk to the beat of your own big fat aging disgracefully drum. Its a merry tune I promise!

Capturing The Curve with Nicky Rockets

Click click you buxom beauty

What's in a photograph?
We live in an age when taking a photograph of yourself has become a national pastime. With our mobile phones having amazing cameras on them we chronicle our lives often on an hour to hour basis.
But what if you hate having your photograph taken? What if over the years humiliated by bad pictures of yourself looking less than glam your self confidence has eroded to such a degree that when the camera comes out you disappear.
Gorgeous women deserve gorgeous photos
For a lot of plus size women this is a daily reality. Dashing out the room when the snapping starts, holding up cushions to hide their faces or simply insisting that they are not included in any pictures taken regardless of the event.
No big problem you might think but consider this, if you hate having your photograph taken almost to the point of phobia you might miss out on pictures of yourself with your kids or loved ones. Pictures that may one day be important. And by deciding you are “unphotogenic” or “too fat” to take a good photo you are marginalising yourself and making a statement-“I am not pretty’ you wouldn't dream of saying to someone else “you are not attractive enough to have your photograph taken” so why on earth would you say this to yourself.
Plustastic
During my work as a make up artist at the vintage pamperbox I have met women who believe adamantly they are unattractive and unphotogenic. They refuse to believe they are beautiful and ridding them of this belief is possibly one of the best parts of my job.

Sultry Glamour-standard
I know for a fact there are no " unphotogenic" women just bad photographs. I've made it my raison d' etre over the last few years to help create photographs for women who previously thought it impossible to have a nice picture taken. Nicky rockets my husband and collaborator is a man who sees the inner goddess in all of his subjects. Fat, thin, young, old he just has a wonderful knack for creating an environment where even the most camera shy woman feels at ease and beautiful. Yes beautiful.
Discover your inner goddess
Along with Lilly we jokingly call ourselves “team wonderful” because if we haven’t made you look and feel wonderful we haven’t done our job.
It's a mission and one I’m very proud of.
Beauty at every size and shape
A few weeks ago we sprinkled some make up and camera magic on Sara. I had met Sara at Plus North and she is truly adorable. Her life has had more than a few major traumas in it and yet she is so positive and upbeat. She spoke to me about how she would love to have a great photograph taken as she really disliked having her picture taken and her blog profile picture wasn't even really in focus. She had finally made the connection that she was a gorgeous curvy woman and wanted some images to help illustrate how far she had come.
The fabulous Sara
Sara spent a few hours with myself and Lilly being taught all our very best hair and make up tricks and being given a total make over. Roller set hair, false eyelashes, glossy lips, the works.
Sharing all our hair and make up tricks
She was already a fabulous looking woman but with our help she actually believed it when we told her - here is part of an email she sent me which she has very kindly let me reproduce:
“I have been on a journey of learning to love the body I now have. For the most part I have pretended. Yet when I saw the photos from my day with Betty, Lilly and Nicky I was truly shocked. The women on those photographs was truly beautiful. Then it finally hit home that woman was me. I cannot thank them enough for this realisation. What started as a fun day turned into a life changing experience"
I won’t lie this made me cry and renewed my determination that every Woman should be made to feel like a total Goddess. Here are some of Sara's pictures:

With this in mind next year I will be holding a series of workshops called “Capturing The Curve” aimed at plus size hotties who are ready to unleash their inner vixen and would like their very own pin up photo session.
As well as sharing with you how I finally embraced my size and shape and offering you tips and strategies for taking your place in the world as a beautiful plus size woman (and I hope hearing about your experiences too) this event will include a workshop in hair and make up techniques, a full makeover for each luscious lovely and a photo shoot with Nicky Rockets.
This will be a safe empowering environment allowing you take control of how you feel about your image, give yourself a well deserved confidence boost in the company of other gorgeous plussies and have a set of photographs taken which you will truly love, photos you want to spam your social media newsfeeds with and turn into screensavers. I will be on hand to help you with posing and will of course be able to offer loads of advice before the event on outfit choices and brainstorm the type of look you would like to achieve.

Capturing the curve
Our First event is on Saturday the 29th of March at TV21 in Manchester. Tickets are £50 and over half have sold already so if this idea tickles your pickle be quick. For tickets and further information click here
