Plus North: The Fatshion Edit

front row seats at the Plus North fashion shows
The recent Plus North event was such a wonderful coming together of  hundreds of sassy plus sized ladies.
For a fashion obsessive like myself one of the most exciting aspects of the event was seeing the latest collections by the plus size brands who featured and watching lots of gorgeous girls strutting their stuff on the catwalk in the latest A/W collections.
As is aways the way with these events I didn’t see everything so if some brands aren’t mentioned or featured in as much detail its simply that I missed there show or didn’t have much time to look through their samples but here is my round up of the standout pieces of the day.

Simply Be
Simply Be kicked off the days fashion shows and I have to say their latest  offerings are smoking.

Such a great winter print-Photo by Janie Britton
As  we have now come to expect they excelled themselves in the dress stakes, My top picks were a red and black prom dress   which looked adorable on Elena from The Frivolous Mrs D blog.

A beautiful Loverobe dress  with amazing gold detailing was definitely one of the standout pieces of the event for me. With a chiffon skirt and dipped hem it just shone with glamour.

A Gemma Collins printed panel bodycon dress was a big crowd pleaser and  I think will be gracing many a Christmas party this year. Its multi coloured panel was so eye catching. it might be a tad on the short side for some ladies though.

A slinky animal print dress (seen here on the very lovely Rachel from the blog  A dress is for life) was a great update for all us animal print lovers. Its peplum styling and just above the elbow sleeves guarantee a flattering fit for everyone and who doesn't love a little bit of leopard-grrr

be still my beating heart
At the Simply Be stand I was also really taken with their latest shoe collection. Leopard print pixie boots, sparkly high heals and animal print pointed toe flats. All very cool indeed.

Pointy flats in classic leopard print-oh yes please

Super cool pixie boots by Simply be

Curvissa
Curvissas collections are definitely getting better and better every season and I really liked the outfits they were showing.

The Curvissa Show-A great selection

My particular fave was the black and grey pattern panel dress which is really fashion forward and would amazing teamed with thick tights and a statement bag.

How fab is this-I'm calling this look "deconstructed robot hottie"
Great Colour trim shift dress by Curvissa
I also loved the colour trim shift dress, the cut is beautiful as are the colours (great pop of orange on the hem which sadly you can't really see properly on this photo but trust me its good) it’s the sort of frock that you could easily wear to the office and then go straight out in the evenings without missing a beat.
They also showed the Jersey print dress with the cutout sleeves on the catwalk which I have seen at a Curvissa event recently and already liked. Extremely wearable  and very chic.
Cute jersey dress with cutout arms

Evans
Evans were one of the events main sponsors and showcased a variety of looks in their show. I am going to come out and say it was a little bit underwhelming although all the ladies who modelled look beautiful. Evans are still prone to creating slightly shapeless clothes and cuts which seem a little bit old fashioned. I think its because they try to cover all bases with their collections, not just edgy, fashionable pieces but also clothes that are practical cover ups. I totally accept that they feel they need to offer that within the stores but for a catwalk show I want to see the more creative stuff. That said there were a few absolute gems so all was not lost.

I adored the monochrome blurred check PU trim shirt  and Black PU trim pencil skirt which was totally Joanie from Mad Men esque, and both the black city dress and Cream contrast powerfit dress by Scarlet and Jo were amazing
I adored the powerfit dresses by Scarlet and Jo (seen in the middle here) but was less excited by the rest of the collection

In fact the Evans collection for me was really a game of two halves as I fell hard for the Scarlet and Jo label (I will be doing a separate post about their collection if you are wondering why they are largely missing from this write up) and actually when I went to their stand I found a super stylish animal print swing coat and some very switched on staff.
Great animal print swing coat by Evans
and an amazing faux black leather biker jacket
I love his whole outfit by Evans-why wasn't it on the catwalk?
So there are edgy pieces within the collection but for some reason they didn’t put a lot of them on the catwalk.Get on the naughty step Evans.

Bon Prix
I didn’t see the Bon prix show but caught up with them at their stand and loved their take on this seasons body con dress
Nice monochrome bodycon by Bon Prix
I particularly liked this rather 1960’s black and white mod dress. Its very Jean Shrimpton, the David Bailey years and I can totally see myself in this with a pair of white pixie boots and a beehive.
Modtastic by Bon Prix
Bon prix has been quietly getting better and better over the last few years and this season is definitely their best yet. Fabulous Peplum dresses and cute jackets galore and their price points are amazing.

Excite

Excite-Living up to there name
Excite which are a fairy new plus size brand lived up to their name and presented a really eye catching collection. Skull scarves  along with a skull print jumper and a rather fantastic jacket with lady Gagaesque spiky shoulder pads  definately got my attention. Fun, fashionable and slightly quirky, Im really excited to see what this label will do next.
This jacket by Excite really caught my eye
I would have liked to have seen a few more shapes than the classic body con one which I know is their signature on their stand but their catwalk show was great.

Yours Clothing
Yet again I didn’t see the Yours clothing show which I was sad about as I am a massive fan of Yours. They always seem to bring out the coolest basics and this season is no exception. Rifling through their rails I spied a fab skull top,
Definately on my wish list
and some soft angora mix sweaters featuring stars and heart designs. Perfect with a pair of jeggings and some biker boots.
Fantastic sweaters by Yours
They also had a very lovely black and white skater dress which I will defiantly be getting. So much of my wardrobe is from these guys and they always have really cute affordable clothing in an amazing sizing range.

I have this style of dress by Yours in a comic book design and really like the mesh design on the top so will definately be getting this.

Conclusion
The styles that look to be hot this autumn/winter are:

  • Lots of body con and illusion dresses both in  primary colours but also with brightly printed centre panels
  • Jewel and berry colours featured in quite a few collections as did gold. Its going to be a glamerous winter.
  • The skater dress shape is still the most popular. Universally flattering and very wearable
  • Monochrome was everywhere so expect a ot of black and white in all the stores
  • The 1950's shape is still being used a lot but the use of geometric patterns and black and whie is giving a bit of a sixties vibe too
I thought it was all rather fab-well done Plus North-a great day of plus size fashion with some wonderful brands.
