My April Faves

Today the sun is shining and all I want to do is talk about the less serious stuff in life.
Here is a little catch up of all the things putting a smile on my dial over the last few months in the world of make up, accessories and wet wipes (yes you read that correctly)

Boujois Blusher in Rose Frisson £7.99
Ive long been a fan of Boujois make up. There has always been a rumour that its made in the same factory as Chanel (not sure if this is true, if you know please add in the comments) but certainly its always felt like a fairly luxurious brand for not huge prices (this is £7.99) its officially spring so I'm all about looking healthy and rosy and this soft rose blush is just gorgeous. Its making me look dewy and youthful even when in actual fact I'm a caffeine riding old hag.

Bourjois blusher turning sallow faced hags into rosy cheeked maidens and for under £8

Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation £10.99
Staying with all things Bourjois Ive also been loving this new foundation by them called 123 Perfect. Its claims to combine different pigments (green, yellow and purple) to help ensure you look as wide eyed and fresh as a teenager (well I may have made that last part up) Its actually very good indeed. Glides on well. Medium coverage and I definitely look healthier since I started using it. Its a great price point as well.

123 Perfect

Not the most exciting of things to review I admit but in my endless quest for eternal youth (the picture in the attic is looking very scary) I thought I would try this face wash. It smells gorgeous and my skin is definitely feeling softer. Do the anti ageing properties work? well I don't look any older since I started using it so who knows.I also bathe in ass's milk so it could be that.

I love Hello Kitty, always have, always will.I use a lot of face wipes both for work and as a mama bear so when I saw these in the 99p store I had to get them. They smell of strawberry and are perfectly good as wet wipes. Its all about the packaging here though I'm quite happy to admit.

Umberto Giannini Shampoo and Conditioner £5.60 a bottle
I received these rather phallic looking hair products as part of a gift set for my birthday back in January. Regular readers of this blog will know I am cursed with rather disappointing hair, no thickness, no body. This shampoo and conditioner combo is the nuts. It leaves my hair perky rather than a flat stringy nightmare so am feeling deep love for Mr Giannini and his shampoo vibrators of love.

Look like something from an Ann Summer party, actually leave your hair looking rather  lovely

Very Hollywood perfume by Micheal Kors £17
This was a rather fabulous gift from my mum (who has the best taste) first of all lets talk about the bottle. Cut glass, vaguely deco in flavour and filled with pink scent. it looks amazing on my dressing table. I feel rather Joan Crawford (pre beating her children with wire coat hangers naturally) when I use this. The scent is fabulous too,a mixture of floral and citrus.Yum

Perfume that demands you wear a feather trimmed dressing gown
Aldi Love Letters From Paris Perfume £5.00
My other fave perfume recently has been this little beauty from Aldi. There was a big buzz about this ages ago as it smells so lovely and is a fiver. I picked it up with my food shopping a few weeks ago and love it. Very light, girly (more than a hint of Chanel Coco about it) a perfect daytime perfume.Looks and smells expensive but is actually very cheep. I have also been described thus.

Inexpensive and Delicious
Real techniques Core Collection Make Up brushes £14.99
I could gush about the Real Techniques brushes forever. Created by the girls behind Pixie Woo they are a make up artists dream. Soft fluffy bristles which dry quickly when you wash them, lightweight swanky handles and a bargainalicous price tag of just £14.99 per set. I already own the eye make up brush set and this is called the Core collection so contains a foundation brush, contouring brush, detailing brush and small powder brush. The foundation brush is the absolute bomb. No streaking and with a fine precision tip for getting into all your nooks and crannies. You can buy these online from Amazon and the Real Techniques website but they are also available in Boots now as well.
Brushes of wonder

I am a huge fan of Limecrimes lipsticks and when I saw that they had brought out a rather glittertastic Unicorn pendent I did slightly flip. This was a Mothers day gift (wow my six year old is good) and I love it. Its shaped a little like a tin and is quite 1970's medallion in flavour. Unicorns, glitter, purple, whats not to love.

Ive also done a vlog review of all these products so if you would like to see me discussing all these goodies, here I am.

Monochrome Muffin OOTD

Sometimes black and white is just right

Today's outfit post is something of a mystery. I discovered this dress (which is by M & S) hiding in my closet as I was getting ready for work today.
I think it may have been a charity shop find from a while ago (I know I didn't buy it new) because I can hand on heart say I have no memory of buying it.
I assumed it must be a poor fit to have been ignored for so long but turns out it fits like a glove-hurrah for being a hoarder, new threads without even leaving the house.
Tesco cardi knotted under the boobs as per usual

Love the white band at the bottom of this frock

I teamed this black and white dress with an animal print cardigan from Tesco which Ive knotted at my waist to create some definition and some back ballet pumps.
My Glamour necklace is by Bette Noir and my hair is roller set with a little black flower in it.

Ready for work with a dash of animal print

Soft roller set hair and a black flower

I'm off to perform hair and make up duties on a fairly large hen party so need to feel comfortable but stylish too and think this outfit is right on the money.
I love putting strong colours together and black and white is so classic. This dress is a linen mix cotton so nice and cool and hopefully wont wrinkle too much.
A manic little gnome (also known as my daughter) decided to get in the picture

My make up is eyeshadows, blanc, corduroy and Omega by Mac with super cat eyeliner by Soap and glory. My eyelashes are by Ardell. Foundation is Bourjois 123 correct and blusher is Rose shimmer by Bourjois. Lipstick is Limecrime in shade countessa.
Glamour necklace by Bette Noir

Skull watch by Torrid

Love how the breezy day has supplied an 80's style wind machine effect

I love clothes, fashion and make up and never let my size or shape cramp my style. Yes I'm fat, yes I'm fabulous. Accept it, or not. I'm too busy enjoying my life and feeling fantastic to care.
If you would like to see more of my outfit posts hop on over to my Curvy Girl Style page Ive recently updated it so theres lots  to look at.

Who Decides What Is Plus Size?

Yesterday an article published by Huffington post pinged into my inbox. The headline read

"Alice Jackson, former anorexic becomes plus size lingerie model, hopes to inspire others"
Ive included the link to the story. its all upbeat heartwarming fare.
Alice has been on a tough road with her eating disorder and having overcome the illness now feels body confident enough to enter into a modelling competition run by lingerie company Curvy Kate. Here's a picture.
The lovely Alice Jackson

So far so good right?
Well yes and no because Alice isn't in my view "plus size" she looks to be a size 12 at the most and has an absolutely amazing body. Her figure is reminiscent of Cindy Crawford's who was the supermodel de jour when I was growing up, so is this now considered bigger than the norm? how did we get here?
Now I don't want to just be argumentative for the sake of it. I fully comprehend that the definition for plus size being used in this article is the yard stick used by the modelling industry, where any girl over a size 12 will automatically be considered plus size or lingerie. I get that, so I suppose my question is do we want the modelling industry slowly redefining how we view women's weight and health? I don't consider them a particularly safe pair of hands, do you?

When did this become plus size?

I must make it clear that this is in now way an attack on Alice Jackson. I think she looks absolutely scrumptious and I'm so pleased for her, its the bigger picture (no pun intended) that bothering me.
If we start to call every woman over a size 12 "plus size" then what am I "supersize" should I come with fries and a drink?
If Alice is plus size what am I? Plus, Plus, Plus into infinity size?

I would love to see this article rewritten without any mention of the world "plus size"
Alice has reached the final of the Curvy Kate competition because she has a great figure. The fact that she is healthy enough to be doing this after struggling with an eating disorder is commendable.Hanging the "plus size label on her is simply ludicrous and I refuse to bow down to the argument that its to do with dress sample sizes, not a true reflection of everyday women.
You can't compartmentalise media coverage in this way. For every reader sophisticated enough to realise that of course this woman isn't plus size there will be many more who take a look at themselves and decide they are obviously bigger than the "norm" and need to take drastic action.
I think its apparent for all to see that I have no problem with the term plus size. I use it to describe myself. I'm a size 18 "Plus size" "curvy" "fat" call it what you will I am totally at ease with these labels but don't start telling me that a size 12 hottie with a Victoria secretsesque body is overweight as I will properly hulk out and you don't want to see me when I'm angry.
The medias perception of what constitutes fat is becoming increasingly scary. Sure call a spade a spade, I'm fat, if a caption under a picture of me read "Plus Size" I wouldn't give a ding dong but to describe this chick as plus size is batshit crazy. Also given that she is a recovering anorexic really crass.
What do you think? Is it acceptable to use this term for a size 12 girl. Should the fashion industry's obsession with sample sizes inform how we describe ourselves?

Crazy Cat Lady OOTD

Miaow

Feeling comfortable in your own skin and not being afraid of what anyone else thinks about your outfit choices is such a good place to be. I never censor what I wear because it isn't "flattering" "age appropriate"  or god forbid "tasteful"
Which brings me neatly to today's outfit of choice.

If this is a fashion breakdown-I think I like it

I'm not sure what drew me to this gold and black leopard print tee shirt from Yours Clothing I'm not one for tee shirts with bling on and can honestly say I don't own anything else with an animal design on (lots of animal print yes sirree but no teddy bear jumpers or owl leggings) so maybe I'm having a fashion breakdown-I don't think so, but who knows.

Ive got a wild animal pawing me-just another night in with the husband then

I love fashion and clothes too much to never try out anything new. Its important to step outside your comfort zone and loads of fun too.Whilst my go to style will always be a 1950's inspired frock I never want to look like a caricature of my own self, Stuck in a rut or only wearing one sort of outfit.

Dorian from Birds of  a feather is alive and well and living in West Kirby

I adore the way the leopard is reclined along your body when you wear this top  and also the slight whiff of Dorian from Birds of a feather chic.
It features what Yours clothing call a "Godet" back which means its panelled and slightly nipped in. I have to say I'm giving Yours Clothing huge brownie points this season. The shape and long length of their tee shirts are fantastic for my "egg on legs silhouette and have made me open my wardrobe to the world of the posh teeshirt in a big way. This one is £16 by the way and goes up to a size 32
With my bright pink lipstick, big hair and leopard print bag I feel slightly "Housewives of Orange county gone bad" and when I say bad, I mean good.

Brownie points for Yours Clothing-loving your tees this year

Ive worn it with some leggings from Asda and a pair of ballet pumps. My cardigan is by Collectif.
Ive become crazy cat lady

I did realise after I brought this that its exactly the same kind of thing my mother would buy so its true folks we do all become our mothers but in this case, that's fine.Nothing finishes off an outfit better than a pair of cat ears I'm sure you will agree. This rather fine pair are from Topshop I think.
Never apologise, never compromise. Fashion is for all.Big, small, fat thin and everything else inbetween.
For more outfit posts check out my curvy girl style page-fit to bursting with pictures of me prancing around shaking what my mama gave me.

Super Heroes, Make up and Cupcakes

just your average Saturday
A few weeks ago we held our very first public Heroes vs Villains event in Liverpool. It was such a pleasure to be involved in such a creative enterprise and as a make up artist really lovely to be able to be imaginative and ramp up the crazy to warp speed.
The girls attending had told us in advance which characters they would like to become so myself, Lilly and Pooki-Rae spent a very enjoyable few weeks practising and perfecting various takes on these heroic homages. Sometimes our jobs rock!
The favourite looks I worked on were the Riddler and Queen Mab. I also adored creating Beast from X-men. I got through a lot of blue face paint!

The Riddler-The very talented Tracey made her dress and hat and even brought her own question mark staff

Bullseye-This was a perfect mix of comic book and sixties styling
The idea for this look came from the bright fur coat the girl owned. It then became one of the most striking looks of the day. Its brilliant when that happens.A tiny seed of an idea creates, well in this case a sexy version of Beast from X-Men
We were blown away by the costumes the girls created. Many of then were handmade or created from lots of different elements and it was hilarious to see them trooping in carrying swords, bowler hats and headpieces made of thorns.
Queen Mab from Shakespeare-My personal make up fave. So magical

This Roller derby chick made an awesome Batgirl

The afternoon went by in a flash. We had been supplied some gorgeous wigs by Wonderland which really helped bring the looks to life, nothing helps more with cosplay than a brightly covered wig.
We also ordered cakes from a rather talented Liverpool baker called Say it with flours They very kindly created some make up themed cakes for me (well what did you expect) so it was really the perfect afternoon, cakes, music and lashing of make up.
How cute is this cake. Love how the false eyelashes match the icing
Being a Beast is hungry work

Nicky Rockets took some simply awe inspiring pictures and it was without doubt one of my favourite shoots to date.
Storm meets Ziggy Stardust

Yuki Most fruitful, a kick ass Manga character for the lovely Bobby-Lou (not your average baby bump picture)

If Ironman was a girl. This costume was a1950's inspired dress with all the Ironman elements and colours, genius

Harley Quinn as a showgirl. This very talented lady created her own rhinestone encrusted comic book/showgirl homage

We are now offering this package as a hen party option and have already had a few bookings which given that myself and Lilly came up with the idea because we are nerds and just really wanted an excuse to dress up ourselves is amazing.
If you would like details on any of our packages visit the Pamperbox website or drop me an email
