New Years Resolutions We Can All Keep

Here is to a rockin 2013

New years resolutions-they are the great divider.
Some people (me especially) love the idea of setting goals as we head into another twelve months. Others find it pointless, knowing from bitter experience that they will fall off the resolution wagon by January the 5th and just feel like they have let themselves down.
My new years resolutions can fill whole sides of A4 paper.
I not only make practical promises (I will floss more) I also write out my dreams, my desires, my hopes. I feel there is a real alchemy about committing these to paper.
Whether you sit on New years eve making affirmations or think its a load of tosh here is a list of New years resolutions that maybe we could all be mindful of if we hope to have a happy 2013

Do one "selfless" thing a day

Now this is a slightly misleading resolution because by performing a selfless act you are basically doing a good thing with no expectation of acknowledgement or reward but here's the thing. The more of these selfless acts you do somehow the more good stuff pings into your life. I'm not sure why. Its like strange goody two shoes voodoo. Who am I to question it.
Don't worry selfless acts don't have to be big gestures just small stuff. Giving the car park ticket which still has thirty minutes left on it to someone about to go and buy one, helping someone carry their heavy bags onto the bus, taking in your neighbours wheelie bin along with yours after bin collection day. These tiny inconsequential acts throw a small bolt of good karma into the air and the end result is a slightly less horrible world.

Send Lovebombs

Ive written about Lovebombs before. Telling people when something they have said or done has impressed you, made you smile or just turned a crappy day into something bearable is such a good habit to get into. We spend so much time and energy exercising our right to complain, get so hung up on letting people have it when they they screw up but rarely put the same time and energy into letting people know we think they rock.
So if you experience really good service at a restaurant email them to let them know.A product delivers above and beyond write a message on their facebook page, a book leaves you breathless and is a total page turner, write a 5 star review on Amazon. If a friend is there for you again and again buy her a copy of Vogue, a bar Of Dairy milk and a beautiful card-just because!

Just Do it!

Start saying Yes in 2013

We all remember everybody walking around with this Nike slogan on their tee shirts but how many of us actually took this advice? So often dissatisfaction comes from the fact that we feel we have missed out on chances or let our insecurities or fears stop us from forging ahead.
In 2013 start saying yes to more opportunities. Don't just sit at home casting envious looks at other people achievements, start following your own dreams.
Its easy to look at others who appear to have it all and think they are just "lucky" but most of these people will tell you that "the harder they worked the luckier they became" and if you do something that doesn't work out? well at least you tried. beats watching the telly and feeling swizzed.

Be Good To Yourself
Image from Pinterest

Its a sad fact that we often take better care of others than we do ourselves. Why do we only light the lovely scented candles or use beautiful china when we have friends over for tea? You wouldn't dream of ignoring your pet if they looked to be in pain, or "forget" to feed your child but how many of us have put off making doctors appointments for ourselves because we are so busy or not eaten properly because the day "got away from us"
Treating yourself well tells yourself and the world that you are deserving of this treatment and is a pretty powerful statement. Ranking your needs equally with your other daily demands is not only important its savvy.
A well looked after, pampered you will perform better, live longer and yes be happier. its common sense.
So don't be  a martyr. Oh and while we are at it,turn off the negative monologue. Ive written here about learning to love yourself. If you need a refresher course dive in.

So there you have it. A few new years resolutions which don't involve losing three stone or learning french but which I think will get us all on the right foot for 2013.

Whatever your plans are for the new year sending you all the love in the world from BB Towers.

Queen Of The Wombles

Queen Womble Of Narnia

Hello sweeties. This is my first post after the Christmas break and I thought I would kick off in a high brow insightful way.
I have brought a new coat!
Yes another one and no I didnt need it-what a strange question. Have we met?
Thanks Curious Orange
Just before Christmas I visited a vintage fair at the Kazimeir in Liverpool and a great shop called Curious Orange (they have a shop in Quiggins in Liverpool too) had a stall there selling vintage clothes, hats, bags and accessories.

Its vintage, its faux fur, it fits!!

I absolutely love vintage clothes but being a plus sized hottie finding anything other than polyester nightmares in my size is as rare as rocking horse poo but I'm always happy to peruse the rails just in case.
Dear readers I struck pure vintage fatty gold! I spied this white faux fur coat hanging on a rail and almost dismissed it as I was so sure it wouldn't fit. However having consumed a glass (or two) of mulled wine I decided to have ago anyway and guess what, it fits like a dream. It cost £40, is snow white (so totally impractical but when has that ever stopped me) and is as soft as a kittens paw.
I'm so glad I tried it on-tipsy shopping rules
As you know I fly in the face of the so called clothing "rules" handed out to fat birds but even I'm aware that a fluffy fur coat can make someone with bangers as big as mine look like a furry dice.
To counteract this Ive given the coat a more nipped in shape by clasping it in with a belt by Evans and I think it looks rather marvellous.
A belt stops it looking too cube like
I feel like a snow queen. OK maybe more Queen Womble but definitely regal.
Its part 1970's Barbra Streisand album cover (probably with one of the Gibb brothers sporting a perm) part Liz Taylor the bloaty Burton years and in my world that's an amazing thing.

Total glam-a white fur coat. Love it!!
I have nowhere to wear it and was so desperate to give it an outing I sported it to Tescos the other day. Lots of people stared. they were envious no doubt.
Also while I have you here let me share a couple of my Christmas presents.
Perfect for Tescos
First of all I received this amazing make up artist necklace by Bete Noire.
I adore it and now that I'm advancing in years (birthday in a weeks time folks-21 again!) its always good to remind myself of what I do for a living should I have a senior moment.
More Bete Noir for my collection

I also received this amazing lipstick by Limecrime. its called "Countessa Fluorescent" smells of marzipan, is hot pink and very creamy. I love it, the packaging is purple with a silver unicorn on-awesome sauce as my six year old would say.

Loving me some Limecrime

Finally I fell in love with these bones headbands by Janine Basil a while ago (she does fab ones with things like "Pow" and "Bam" on as well) so was chuffed to bits to find one in my stocking. Its a nice dose of Betty Rubble chic to get me through the post Christmas slump.
Bones for my bonce

I hope you all had a marvellous crimble. Mine was grand. Lots of eating, drinking and being merry. See you soon love Queen Womble!

A Bittersweet Christmas

I absolutely love the lead up to Christmas. For me its the best part of the whole thing. The carols, the mulled wine and my little girls excitement as she counts down the days until Santa's visit.
This year its a little bittersweet as my lovely nan Rhoda  passed away a few days ago. She was eighty three and wasn't in the best of health but she will be greatly missed and as others who have experienced will know there is something so very sad about arranging  a funeral whilst the world gears up for the festivities. Here is a lovely picture of her aged twenty. How glamorous does she look!

RIP Nan you will be missed

My nan was an amazing woman well ahead of her time. A talented painter she went to Art school in Birmingham and was a founder member of the Bullwell Art club which is still going strong today.
Always political she was a socialist in the 1960's and an active member of CND, often taking my mum on "Ban the bomb" marches when she was a child.
Fiercely independent she travelled alone to Kenya in the early 1970's to teach.Bombing around on her motorbike (always her preferred mode of transport) and absorbing as much as she could about Africa which she always loved.
Her interest in other cultures remained strong and when she returned to England she taught at an Infant school in a fairly deprived part of Nottingham attended by many children who didn't speak English. She learnt to speak Urdu, Hindu,Punjabi and even a smattering of Vietnamese to ensure she could give her kids the very best education possible.
She also loved a good drink, a good laugh and listening to music (She was an accomplished piano player)
One of her favourite bands was Queen and I will never forget her telling me how handsome she thought Freddie Mercury was. She then told me in a confidential tone " I know he is gay by the way and think its quite fantastic" When he died she painted a beautiful little portrait of him and festooned it with a HIV ribbon.
She devoted herself full time to painting once she retired and held many exhibitions of her work. Here is one of her paintings.

As a staunch Atheist she had no time for any notions of an afterlife but wherever she is now, she will be greatly missed by her family. Hers was a life well lived and she wont be forgotten.

Casino Themed Nail Art

Betty was obviously totally useless at nail stamping so Lilly had to step in

A couple of weeks I received a nail set with some game themed nail stamps
(It was part of a Ladbrokes promotion as they have a new range of Christmas casino games )
Ive never used nail stamps before but was quite taken with the playing cards and lucky seven designs so decided to have a go. Now I'm not particularly talented at nail art. I can do a few little designs such as polka dots or leopard print using a nail pen but that's really my limit.
I tried to use the stamper a few times and sadly it seems I lack the ability to do stamping myself. However the designs were so pretty I asked Lilly Von Pink to use them instead so here is her tutorial.

You will need

  • Nail Polish 2 colours
  • Nail Polish remover
  • Cotton wool buds
  • A Konad set which contains printing plate, scraper and stamper
The essential stamper kit

Step 1: Prep nails and apply base colour of your choice. We used white so the image would stand out

Step 2: Clean all you equipment with nail polish remover (i.e your printing plate, scraper and stamp) making sure theres no dust or grease to distort your image

*This part you have to work quickly so practice stamping onto paper*

Step 3: choose your first image and take your second colour of polish and apply to the image (stipple the polish on to make sure you get all the lines)

Step 4: scrape the polish off. Holding the scraper flat against the plate firmly scrape the polish off so the polish can only be seen in the lines of the printing plate.

Step 5: Take your rubber stamp and roll it on top of the image you have just prepared ( roll it in one movement i.e left to right don't rock back and forth)

Your chosen image will now be on the rubber stamp

Step 6: Then with your stamp use the same movement to apply to the nail (Position as best you can and roll the image onto the nail)

Step 7: continue with as many designs as you like.Leave to dry then seal with top coat

* Top Tip make sure you clean your printing plate. The smallest thing can stop a successful print and unless you are a fairly competent nail artist its worth investing in the special nail polish offered as part of these kits as it has a slightly thicker consistency which makes it easier to work with.

And there you have it-casino themed nail art. You can get stamps with hundreds of designs on from Konad  everything from butterflies to handbags.Happy stamping!

A very Glam Christmas Event Indeed

Two Saturdays ago TheVintage Pamperbox held its first Christmas themed pamper event. As a total festive head I had already dipped my toe into the water of kitsch Christmas shoots before but had never held a whole day dedicated to all things jingly.
The Vintage Pamperboxes Jingle Belles

Creatively we wanted to base the photos loosely on 1950’s Christmas cards, bright colours, neon Christmas trees, artificial but also mega glamorous.

The workshop we taught was a slight deviation from the classic 1950’s look we would usually showcase at an event like this. To match the sparkle of the gorgeous frocks being worn we decided to do a smoky glitter eye and also included some face contouring to give some high cheekbones.

The girls who came were a lovely bunch and all got totally into the spirit of the event. I played my kitsch crimbo playlist, we ate mince pies and drank mulled wine and it was totally awesome.

I’m so lucky as I do a job that more often than not doesn’t feel like work and to be able to celebrate my favourite time of year with lashings of make up, wiggle dresses and cute jumpers was an absolute joy.

It certainly got me in the mood for Christmas and I’m sure you will agree the girls looked amazing.
